Frol Shubunov is a jaw harp maker from Kronstadt. When he began working with Oberton Pro in June 2009, he described himself as a novice learning the craft through experimentation. Over the following months, Shubunov repeatedly revised frame proportions, reed geometry and fastening methods, comparing the sound of successive designs. That autumn he launched his own website, Vargan Lab.

His work drew on the construction of Yakut khomuses while developing it in an individual direction. Shubunov made partly forged instruments, experimented with a longitudinal bend at the root of the reed and used a four-point fastening system to improve structural strength and stability. The sound of his jaw harps ranged from light and responsive to low-pitched and rich in growling side-tones. He also paid close attention to decorative finishing and made wooden cases for his instruments.
