Ziya Ishbuldovich Khalilov
Ziya Ishbuldovich Khalilov (1953–2009) was a Bashkir kurai player, singer, teacher and maker of kurais and kubyzes based in Kumertau. He was named an Honoured Worker of Culture of the Bashkir ASSR. Khalilov was born in the village of Vtoroye Itkulovo in Baymaksky District and studied the kurai under Adigam Iskuzhin.
In 1984, Khalilov won first prize in the Yomabay Isyanbayev Republican Kurai Competition; he also became a winner of the Gaziz Almukhametov Young Singers Competition. His repertoire included more than one hundred Bashkir folk songs and instrumental tunes.
In 1981, Khalilov founded a Bashkir folk ensemble in Kumertau and directed it for many years. He worked as an editor in republican television and radio, as a vocalist and kurai soloist with the Bashkir State Philharmonic, as an actor at the Bashkir State Puppet Theatre, and later as head of the folk arts department at the Duslyk Cultural and Methodological Centre. Khalilov trained many kurai and kubyz players.
As a maker, Khalilov produced both kurais and kubyzes and participated in Russian and republican exhibitions and competitions. His kubyzes are characterised by strong steel frames, broad reeds and a bright, smooth sound in the upper register; the instruments are particularly well suited to fast playing with prominent high overtones. A regional festival of Bashkir folk instruments held in Kumertau is named in Khalilov’s memory.
