Choose a jaw harp
Coen van Hoboken
Coen van Hoboken is a Dutch inventor, musician and maker of experimental musical instruments from Deest. Under the name Tong Instruments, he develops jaw harps, chromatic and linear kalimbas, metal TongGongs and wooden TongDrums.
At the Dutch Mondharpdag festival in 2015, van Hoboken presented a hybrid copper-and-steel jaw harp with five independently sounding reeds. They form the pentatonic sequence C–D–F–G–A, with overtone series that combine harmonically. Each reed can be retuned one note upwards or downwards.
The CH800 5-Tone Mondharp represented in the catalogue requires a distinct playing technique: each stroke must follow the longitudinal axis of the selected reed. Players can combine overtones from different fundamental notes and damp individual sounds with the thumb at the base of the reeds.
