A jaw harp with a thin frame and a soft, light, highly sensitive reed. Even the lightest touch produces a loud, full sound. Its crackling timbre includes pronounced mechanical overtones, especially on outward strokes. The reed mechanics are simple: the elbow vibrates freely and ends in a sharp bend rather than a ring, although some examples have a soldered ball covering the tip. This causes little discomfort either with very careful playing or with uninhibited, expressive playing where precise volume control is not the aim. A simple, loud jaw harp.
