Dmitriy Popov

Dmitry Popov

Dmitry Petrovich Popov is a maker of Yakut khomuses from the village of Tyungyuly in Megino-Kangalassky District. The Museum and Center of the Khomus of the Peoples of the World holds steel blanks for his instruments, made in 2001 and 2003 and showing the stages involved in shaping the classical M-shaped frame. Popov’s works were included in a ranking of makers published in 2010 and compiled following the “Kömüs Dorghoon Kustuga-4” charity evening.

Popov’s khomuses are characterised by their classical Yakut form, wide dynamic range and stable reed response to different strokes. The instrument featured in the Oberton Pro catalogue had a clean, smoothly muted sound with a noticeable mechanical background and was suited to active, forceful playing.
