Makigami Koiti
Makigami Koichi (born 1956) is a Japanese vocalist, poet, composer, director, jaw harp and theremin player from Atami. Since 1978, he has led the experimental rock group Hikashu, combining song, vocal improvisation and theatrical performance. Makigami received the inaugural Makoto Ooka Award for his poetry in 2020 and a Grants to Artists award from the New York-based Foundation for Contemporary Arts in 2024.
Makigami’s jaw harp practice is closely connected with Siberian traditions. He studied with Robert Zagretdinov, mastered several types of jaw harp and helped generate a new wave of interest in the instrument in Japan. Since 1997, he has organised appearances by musicians from Tuva and Altai in Japan while developing khoomei performance and teaching. In 2017, he won first prize in the contemporary category of the International Khoomei Competition in Kyzyl.
In performance, Makigami combines the jaw harp with extended vocal techniques and the theremin, exploring resonance and overtones across all three. The catalogue archive contains his Small and Medium Koukins. These are compact instruments with stiff reeds, a broad dynamic range and a pronounced response to breathing.
