T-Rex
Sergey Makaseev is a jaw harp maker from Tolyatti and the founder of the T‑Rex workshop. His instruments have been represented in the Oberton Pro catalogue since at least 2012.
A recognisable feature of Makaseev’s work is the use of unconventional frames with massive geometric elements and a distinctly industrial appearance. In some designs, the shape of the frame is additionally adapted for a more comfortable grip. The maker has experimented with the size, proportions and stiffness of his instruments while maintaining good mechanics and stable reed movement. Their acoustic qualities, however, have varied noticeably between models.
The TR636 “Hare” represented in the catalogue is a compact jaw harp with a rigid frame and a stable reed. It has a muted, layered sound with a narrow spectrum in which mechanical components and the rustle of the player’s finger remain noticeable. The instrument is particularly suited to rhythmic playing and the creation of unusual timbral effects.
