Turi Petralia
Turi Petralia is a Sicilian maker of marranzani from San Giovanni la Punta in the province of Catania. Musician and researcher Luca Recupero names him among the wrought-iron craftsmen who revived the production of small numbers of high-quality instruments in Sicily alongside the widespread souvenir models.
Petralia’s marranzani follow the traditional Sicilian construction. Their iron frames are hot-forged on an anvil, while the reeds are drawn out with a hammer. Sicilian instruments are also distinguished by their characteristic method of attaching the reed to the frame.
The catalogue includes two archived instruments by Petralia: the TP537 marranzano, whose very stiff reed requires forceful strikes, and an enlarged version with a longer reed and a lower sound.
