Andrey Romanov
Andrey Romanov is a jaw harp maker from Lyskovo in the Nizhny Novgorod Region. He does not limit himself to a single fixed model: the instruments in the catalogue differ markedly in frame geometry, reed length, dimensions and other properties.
Romanov’s experiments with design were recognised at the 2016 Jaw Harp Festival in Moscow, where more than thirty makers presented 82 instruments. His jaw harp with a six-point reed attachment took second place in the supplementary “Original Design” category.
Among Romanov’s works, the 20-centimetre-long “Storm 9” stands out in particular. It is a very large, very low-pitched jaw harp — the scale of the instrument is immediately apparent both to the eye and the ear.
A distinctive aspect of Romanov’s work is its connection with the sea: he makes jaw harps during long voyages. The maritime theme also unifies the cases for his instruments, which are decorated with marine-themed carvings.
