Nyoman Suwida

About the maker and their creative work.

Nyoman Suwida

I Nyoman Suwida

I Nyoman Suwida is a Balinese musician and genggong maker from the village of Batuan in Sukawati District, Bali. He founded and leads the Genggong Kutus ensemble, which preserves and develops the tradition of genggong playing. The ensemble performs in Bali and beyond the island; in 2023 it presented its program at the Bali Arts Festival for the first time.

Suwida performs both traditional music and contemporary compositions, collaborating with jazz musicians among others. He makes genggongs himself from seasoned and thoroughly dried sugar-palm leaf stalks, selecting suitable material in the village of Tenganan. He places particular emphasis on passing the tradition on to children: he teaches them to play and gives them instruments to spark their interest in the genggong.
