Eduardo Roveri
Eduardo Roveri (died November 2023) was a Brazilian jaw harp maker from Jundiaí, São Paulo. He referred to his instruments by the name traditionally used in Brazil, “berimbau de boca.” Roveri learned the craft independently: in 2014, he recalled that he had no teacher and had previously seen jaw harps only on the internet. Through discussions with makers on an international forum, he sought to understand not only the mechanics but also the finer points of creating a high-quality instrument.
Roveri’s work is characterized by large, substantial frames with expressive outlines and comparatively small reeds. The instruments represented in the Oberton Pro catalog have a loud, responsive, and melodic sound with subdued upper overtones; some examples also exhibit mechanical and background noises. When developing one of his designs, Roveri studied and played drymbas made by Vladimir Pyzhov; he produced instruments of this type in aluminum and brass.
