Sergey Pyzhov

Sergey Pyzhov is a jaw harp maker who began working in Kherson and now works in the Smolensk Region. He gained international recognition in 2011 at the Best Khomus in the World competition in Yakutsk. His unusual instrument, combining wooden and steel components, took first place in the Best Non-Yakut Khomus in the World category and received the jury’s highest score for aesthetics. At the 2016 Moscow competition, Pyzhov’s jaw harps took first place in three pitch categories — ultra-low, middle and high. His victories across several categories demonstrate his ability to work with substantially different designs and ranges.

Pyzhov did not keep his accumulated expertise confined to his own workshop. In 2014, his detailed master class was published, presenting the entire making process step by step — from a steel rod and a piece of saw blade to gap adjustment and final tuning. This is a rare example of openly sharing not only the general design, but also the practical techniques involved in making a professional jaw harp.
