Oleg Shchipanov is a jaw harp maker from Perm. His instruments feature rigid, stable frames and well-developed mechanics that support rapid sequences of strokes. At the same time, the maker’s individual models differ noticeably in register, reed stiffness and timbre.
The OS1151 “Lysva” is a relatively low-pitched jaw harp with a clean, restrained and slightly muted sound. Its timbre is not overloaded with incidental noise and allows the player to concentrate on articulation. The instrument has medium sensitivity but is exceptionally fast and comfortable to play.
The higher-pitched OS1152 “Vashkor” has a singing sound and a stiff reed. It supports rapid strokes in both directions but requires considerable effort from the player. Its even fundamental timbre provides good control over harmonic overtones, although a constant faint background noise is present. This is a musical but physically demanding instrument intended for firm, confident strokes.
